Advice for Home Vegetable Gardening

Home gardening is hard work but it is also quite fun and rewarding.ADVICE FOR HOME VEGETABLE GARDENING – Home gardening is hard work but it is also quite fun and rewarding. Whether you want to start a flower garden or a vegetable garden, plants beautify, reduce erosion and in the case of a vegetable garden, you will have something delicious to eat. It also saves you money if you can grow some vegetables and herbs at home because you will not have to buy them from the store.

Starting Your Vegetable Garden

Before you start gardening, you have to choose the area that you want to start planting. You have to make sure that your soil will be able to keep your plants growing and there is access to water. If you live in an apartment, do not let this deter you because you can grow herbs in containers on your porch. Sometimes, persons that have yard space still have to use containers because their soil is not conducive to food production.

Crops to Plant

You should plant crops that you enjoy and those that can thrive well in your soil. For example, carrots have to grow in soil that allows them to grow downward and straight. For someone who can set up a container garden, herbs such as chive, thyme, parsley, mint and basil may be more realistic. If there is sufficient backyard space, then short term crops such as tomatoes, cucumbers and eggplants can work well.

Making Gardening Easier

For your vegetable garden to thrive, you have to ensure that you properly irrigate it, provide adequate shading and reduce the need to weed.

 Irrigation

If you enjoy going outside and taking time with each plant, then manual watering can work for you. Another option is to set up a drip irrigation system which would irrigate your plants automatically when you turn on a pipe. Of course, you would still have to manually water your container garden with a watering can.

 Shading

You should research how much sunlight your plants can take and set your garden in an appropriate location. Another idea is to erect a small green house that can provide shade when your plants need it. Container plants can easily be shifted around to avoid too much sunlight.

 Weeding

Weeding is most likely one of the most hated gardening tasks. It is time consuming and hard on your back. However, there are some solutions that a gardener can use such as ground cover or mulch. Weeding is never avoidable regardless of what you use but it can be reduced by taking preventative measures which slow the growth.

Potential for Small Business

Your vegetable garden can do more than save you money off your grocery bill. It has the potential to help you start a small business. If you have the space, you can produce enough crops that you can sell in your neighborhood or at a restaurant or grocery store. This can be realized with herbs because they are resistant to many pests and diseases and there are those that thrive in the winter.
