Many people get a little confused when it comes to applying fertilizer on a lawn. Fertilizing a lawn is one of those jobs where you can actually do more harm than good and the number of my friends that I see who over fertilize their lawns and then wonder why their lawn in not looking so great is a bit worrisome.
The key to fertilizing your lawn comes in three parts:
1. The first thing you need to determine is the type of fertilizer you need. If you have ever been to the Garden Nursery you will have seen a huge range of fertilizers available and many do exactly the same job. However, there are specialist fertilizers for specific types of grass and then there are the all-in-one weed and feed varieties. On top of that there are all-in-one varieties that specifically target certain types of weeds, such as Crabgrass or Dandelions. Take a good look at your lawn and determine what you want to do and then purchase a fertilzer that is suitable for the task.
2. The second thing is buying the right equipment. Yes, you could stake and mark out your lawn and then apply, by hand, the appropriate amount of fertilizer to each square foot, but this is time consuming and laborious. You are much better off buying a fertilizer spreader and there are several on the market that will adequately do the job. The first video below deals with this issue.
3. Thirdly there is the issue of being able to use the equipment that you have bought. Some fertilizer spreaders have different spreader settings, which is an extremely useful feature that will prevent you from over-fertilizing your lawn – something that many of us are guilty of and this can do more damage to your lawn. The second video below provides information to help you learn how to use a fertilizer spreader.
Take the time to watch both the videos. They are both short and sweet and you can learn so much and this will certainly help you to create a beautiful and lush lawn for your garden.
