The Houseboat Island

THE HOUSEBOAT ISLAND – How would you like to live on a boat or maybe a tropical island?  Have you ever thought about both?  Well here’s a novel idea that I can across in the news the other day…

Why can’t you have a houseboat and an island all at the same time?  Well now you can with the Osros floating Island.

This type of lifestyle, concerning luxury yachts, is normally reserved for the billionaires of this world but Osros thought it would be better if it bought a certain lifestyle closer to being affordable for many other and therefore designed a yacht that is a mixture of houseboat and island.  The price tag?  A mere £3million ($4.6m).

At $4.6m it's much cheaper in comparison with a Super-Yacht.

Yes it is still a huge amount of money but when you look at a super-yacht starting from $10 million, and that’s bog standard stuff, then the Osros begins to look  pretty cheap in comparison.

The Osros consists of 6 luxury double bedrooms that can accommodate 12 people.  It can also house up to 4 staff members and is kitted out to afford the owners a lifestyle of pure luxury.

To put this into context I recently came across a super-yacht that was just being finished.  This also had room for 12 and 8 staff but cost a staggering $65m, so when you compare the Osros with a luxury super-yacht then it becomes a very cheap option if this is the type of lifestyle you would like to live.

For those of you who are environmentally conscious then the Osros will certainly impress you with its 120 square meters of solar panels, in what the company calls an ‘autonomous power supply based energy system’ and can generate energy both day and night through the solar panels and ultra quite wind energy system.  When it comes to heating or air conditioning the Osros uses the sea by using its heat to power these.

I don’t know about you but I like space, and most boats I’ve been on (no never been on a super-yacht) are a bit on the cramped side.  Not so with the Osros as it has an enormous 1,000 square meters of living space and you can tailor the interior to your exact requirements, including a Sun Deck, a BBQ entertainment, Jacuzzi, Bar and more.

Overall the Island Boat is pretty high-tech with considerations for regulated lighting and systems management.  There is also ample storage space for things such as diving equipment and of course provisions.

All told if you ordered the same specification from a luxury super-yacht builder the chances are you wouldn’t get much change out of $100 million so at $4.6 million the Osros Island Boat really is a steal at the price.

“In the beginning, my goal was to create an exclusive, high-quality hotel chain based on floating platforms. With the progress of the project it became clear that the attractive and unusual concept of Orsos Islands should not be limited to only a selected group of people.  Orsos Islands should reach a much broader audience, people with an awareness of modern life and a feeling of responsibility towards the environment.’” Gábor Orsós

If this is just the thing you’ve been looking for in order to escape the Rat-Race once and for all then this  Austrian company has begun to manufacture a prototype in Germany and expects to unveil it to the public sometime in late 2013.

I have to be honest, this type of lifestyle really appeals to me and I for one will be keeping an eye out for the unveiling and if possible I would certainly book a flight in order to get a hands on look around the Island Boat.

What do you think?  Would you pay $4.6m in order to live the island lifestyle?  Please leave your comments below.

Yes, it’s a pricey items, but that’s Marine for you. In my research I looked at a few super-yachts and these were in the region of $100m a pop.  It’s certainly a lifestyle I couldn’t afford, although if I had the money I might well be very tempted.
