HOW TO FIX A DRAFTY WINDOW – Can you see your curtains move when it’s windy? I you can then you have a draft coming in and not only does this make a room colder you’ll end up spending a lot more money on your heating bills trying to keep the room warm, but alas this will be in vein. Let’s fix the problem with the help of this guide on how to fix a drafty window.
Step 1
The first thing is to give the windows and surrounds a good clean. Take some white spirit and clean around the edging of the window. The surface must be free of any dirt, grime or grease. If you do not have white spirit (thinners) then try some warm water with sugar soap – this also works extremely well.
Step 2
Buy a roll of insulation / draft excluder tape. There are various types and they come in varying widths and can be bought from any DIY store.
Step 3
Before you start, read the manufacturer’s instructions for installation. Start at the top corner of the window and remove the protective strip to reveal the adhesive.
Step 4
Stick the insulation tape and work your way around the entire window removing the protective backing as you go. DO NOT peel off all the protective backing in one go as you will find the insulation will be sticking to itself and parts of the window where you do not want it to stick. When you come to the end, cut the tape with scissors.
Step 5
If it’s windy outside, take a candle and light it. Now move it carefully around the edge of the window. If the flame remains still you have solved the problem. If not see where the draft is coming in and apply the draft tape to that area.
