How to Fix a Leaking Gutter

HOW TO FIX A LEAKING GUTTER – If you notice that any part of your guttering is leaking then you really need to fix this without delay. Leaving it can lead to the fascia boards rotting and cause damage to your brickwork.  Think about this carefully because water can do a massive amount of damage to your brickwork, internal timbers, walls and ceilings.  A simple fix of your guttering could save you a lot of grief, time and money.

Fortunately fixing a leak in your guttering is not a difficult job and can take less than 15 minutes to do. In this guide, we’ll show you how to get this little maintenance job done.

 Step 1

Takes your ladders and position these where you detected the leak. Remember that climbing high is dangerous, so make sure the ladders are placed on solid level ground. Get a friend to hold the ladder at the bottom.

 Step 2

While you are still on the ground level, prepare the sealant and sealant gun. There are a number of gutter sealants, such as Tech7, that are designed to seal guttering even in the wet, so buy a sealant that is designed for this job. Cut the end of the nozzle at an angle with a craft knife. Now climb the ladder to start the job.

 Step 3

Clean out any old leaves, and other debris that has built up in the gutters.  You can use an old paint brush or a stiff bristle hand brush depending on how caked the debris is in your guttering.

 Step 4

Locate the area of the guttering that is leaking and apply the sealant.  You can do this by simply pouring a small amount of water in the guttering and then locate the leak.  You can also, if you have a long enough garden hose, take this up and turn it on.

 Step 5

While you are up there check the guttering for any lose brackets or joints.  These are easy to fix simply by tightening the screws or applying some silicone sealant along the joints.

 Step 6

Repeat this for any other parts of the guttering that is leaking… Job Done!

No matter how small the leak is, it pays to quickly repair a leaky gutter. When clogged and neglected, it can result to flooding. By then, serious damage comes after, such as structural damage.
