How to Install Deadbolts on Your Doors

HOW TO INSTALL DEADBOLTS ON YOUR DOORS – One of the best ways to secure your doors is to install deadbolts. Deadbolts are extremely tough and designed to deter any would be burglar. It is surprisingly easy to do and this guide will help you do just that.

 

 Step 1

Before you go about buying a deadbolt you need to know the material your door is made from. Wood? Fiberglass? Steel?

 

 Step 2

Measure the thickness of your door also. Deadbolts are made to fit different door thickness.

 

 Step 3

With the information above in hand, take a trip to your local DIY store and purchase the appropriate deadlock.

 

 Step 4

Carefully follow the manufacturer’s instructions for fitting your new lock.

 

 Step 5

Following the package instructions drill a bore hole to the measurements given.

 

 Step 6

Mark a horizontal line on the inside of the door where the lock is to be fitted. Close the door and mark a line on the door jamb in line with the one on the door.

 

 Step 7

Open the door and with the recommended drill bit size drill a hole in the size until you punch through the bore hole.

 

 Step 8

Drill a hole, following the instructions, into the door frame to accommodate the bolt.

 

 Step 9

Mark out the deadbolt face place on the door and then chisel out a recess so the plate sits flush with the edge of the door.

 

 Step 10

Slide the deadbolt through the door hole and fit the face plate.

 

 Step 11

Take the locking mechanism, this can be a simple key lock or keypad and fit.

 

 Step 12

In the door frame, place the bolt housing and mark around. Remove it and chisel out so that the face place sits flush with the frame. Screw this into place.

 

 Step 13

Close the door and turn the bolt lever to make sure it fits without sticking or jamming.
