 Step 1

Decide how big you want your coffee table to be… Consider the length, width and height.

 Step 2

Take a pencil, graph paper and ruler and make a plan, including all the sizes of the timber you will need – Top, Legs, Inner Support Rails.

 Step 3

With your plans in hand go to your local DIY store or Timber Merchant and purchase your materials. You will also need screws, right angle slot brackets and glue.

 Step 4

Lay out all your pieces and organize them so they are at hand.

 Step 5

Take the table top and from the underside mark in about 3″ all the way around. Use a pencil, tape measure and set square. This is the line that your support rail will be fixed too.

 Step 6

Glue and screw the support rail in place around the line you made leaving a gap in each corner to the size of each table leg. Once secured place a length of support rail across each corner. You’ll need to cut the angles with a mitre saw.

 Step 7

Take each leg and secure them to the support rails using the right angle slot brackets.

 Step 8

You can add additional strength to the legs and rails with glue and or dowel joints. For making carpentry joints see our section Carpentry section, from the drop-down menu under DIY.

 Step 9

Turn the table upright and finish by sanding the furniture smooth. You can complete the job by varnishing, polishing, staining or painting the coffee table.
