How To Make a Plant Dolly

HOW TO MAKE A PLANT DOLLY – To brighten up your garden deck or patio why not plant large plant pots and to make it easier to move them around make a plant dolly. Making a plant dolly is very easy and will certainly save you an awful lot of effort when it comes to moving large plants pots around the patio or even in the home.  You can make the planter from an old whiskey barrel and then attach this to a plate with wheels.  In this guide we’ll show you just how easy it is.

 Step 1

Find an old Oak Barrel or buy a wooden plant pot from your local Garden Nursery.  The size is entirely up to you and remember once you sit it on the dolly wheels it’ll still be easier to move around so if you really fancy a large plant pot then go for it.

 Step 2

Take a sheet of timber or plywood and place the barrel or pot on top.

 Step 3

Take a pencil and draw around the base of the barrel or pot.

 Step 4

Cut out the circle with a jigsaw.  Remember to wear eye protection while doing this.

 Step 5

Buy some run casters from you local DIY Store.  These are pretty cheap and you need a total of four caster wheels.

 Step 6

From about 2″ or 3″ from the inside of the timber circle plate, drill FOUR holes in a square pattern.

 Step 7

Take a nail and hammer this into the center of the base.  Don’t hammer it in too far.  Take a length string and ties this around the nail.  Now stretch the string until you are approximately 2″ from the edge.  Get your pencil and draw a line around the base keeping the string taught as you go.  Now mark four positions on the base where each of the caster wheels will go.  Attach your casters with screws and once all four are secured in place you can turn it up the right way.

 Step 8

Place your barrel or pot on top and move it about easily.

 Step 9

You can, if you choose, secure the circle plate to the bottom of the barrel or pot, by screwing it to the circle plate.

 Step 10

Once you have finished the project you can fill the plant pot with some good quality compost and plant up the pot with some nice bedding plants or other plants of your choosing.
