HOW TO STOP A CREAKING DOOR – Squeak, creak, squeak, it’s just plain annoying when every time you open or close the door it creaks or squeak and it’ll drive you mad if you don’t fix it. It’s not a difficult job to put a stop to a creaking or squeaking door and in this guide we’ll show you how to.
Step 1
Open the door and place a dust sheet or old newspaper directly under the door hinges. This will save you from getting any mess on your floor coverings.
Step 2
Take a screwdriver and tighten any loose screws, both in the door and on the frame. Nine times out of ten this is the main culprit of a creaking door. Once you have tightened all the screws try opening and closing the door. If that didn’t solve the problem then move on to Step 3.
Step 3
Take some WD40 or other lubricating oil and spray onto the door hinges and the bolt that holds the hinge together. Note this is where the dust sheet or old newspaper comes in handy – you don’t want oil dripping directly onto your flooring coverings.
Once you have given the hinges and bolts a good coating, try opening and closing the door a few times. Note that if you still hear it creaking do not despair – it might take a few opening and closing actions for the oil to work into all parts so try this a few times. Didn’t work – OK, let’s have a look at Step 4.
Step 4
Take a hammer and screwdriver remove the hinge bolt, one at a time. Take a clean rag and and give them a wipe over. Get some wire wool and remove any rust that you can see. If you can’t see any it is worth doing this anyway just to make sure. Now spray the hinge with a liberal coating of WD40 and replace hinge bolts. Repeat this for the top, bottom and middle hinge. Open and close the door a few times to let the lubricant work into the hinge and hinge bolt.
One of the above should do the trick but if the problem persists then see about going out and buying some new hinges and fit these.
