HOW TO TREAT TIMBER DECKING - Timber decking is extremely popular and allows you to create spaces for entertaining and relaxing in the garden. As with anything made from timber it will become worn and rot if not properly looked after and protected. This guide provides an easy step-by-step approach to help you clean and treat your timber decking so it continues to look great for years.
Step 1
Remove all the patio furniture, plant pots and other items from the timber decking.
Step 2
Start by sweeping down the decking by using a stiff bristle yard brush. You need to remove any debris, moss, algae and dust from the surface prior to treating.
Step 3
Purchase some good quality Decking Cleaner. This is available in nearly all DIY Stores. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for use. Most good quality decking cleaner will remove, moss, mold and algae.
Step 4
Scrub the decking down with hot soapy water and or sugar soap and leave to dry. If you have a Pressure Washer then use this to wash down the decking.
Step 5
Working in areas, pour the decking cleaner onto the surface and scrub with a stiff hand brush and leave for 20 minutes or as directed by the manufacturers guidelines, which can be found on the container.
Step 6
Once you have completed the entire decking area wash it down using cold water and a stiff yard broom. Again, if you have a Pressure Washer, then this is ideal to do the job.
Step 7
Once the decking is completely dry and depending on the decking you have you can now apply a Decking Oil or Decking Stain.
Step 8
Most Decking Oils and Stains come in tubs and some even have applicators included. Choose which one you like and apply it according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
Step 9
Start by stirring the oil or stain thoroughly with a stick.
Step 10
Take the applicator, or if one was not supplied, a medium to long pile paint roller and work from one end of the decking to the other. Do not overload the applicator or paint roller.
Step 11
For best results apply at least 2 coats of oil or stain and allow to dry thoroughly before applying additional coats. Refer to the manufacturers drying times which will be printed on the tub or tin.
