HOW TO USE WEED MATS – Using weed mats to suppress the growth of unwanted weeds in your flower beds is an excellent way to do just that. You’ll also save yourself a lot of time and backache from having to be on your hands and knees pulling out weeds. Here’s some handy advice on how to install weed matting.
Step 1
There are many different types from plastics to bio-degradable products. You can also use mulch to as a weed matting. Pick one that fits in with your budget and your needs. If in doubt ask the staff at your local Garden Nursery for advice.
Step 2
Measure the total area of your flower bed. To do this simply measure the length x width as this will give you the overall square footage. Once you know the quantity of the materials it’s time to take a trip to your local Garden Nursery and purchase the quantity you require.
Step 3
Weed your flower beds before laying down the matting. If you haven’t let your weeds get out of control this should be an easy enough job.
Step 4
Treat the entire area with weed killer or better still use organic methods, such as digging up the weeds by hand.
Step 5
Cover the entire area with the matting you have purchased. Be careful… don’t cover bulbs that you planted as they will not be able to push through the matting. A tip here is to locate your bulbs and then cut a small slit in the matting so that the bulbs can sprout through.
Step 6
If you intend to use plastic or bio-degradable matting then stake down this every foot or so – you don’t want the wind ripping up all your hard work.
As you can see, fitting weed matting is a very easy job and with a little bit of effort this will really cut down on the weed growth in your garden.
