How to Measure a Floor Area

HOW TO MEASURE A FLOOR AREA – There are many DIY projects that involve measuring the floor area of a room.  For instance you may be looking to lay a new carpet or laminate the floor area and so knowing how to measure  the area of your floor is a vital skill if you are going to order sufficient materials to do the job you want.

Measuring a floor area is pretty simple, take a look at the steps below, follow these and you will be able to easily calculate the floor areas in your home.

 Step 1

If you have a Square or Rectangle Room without any recesses then you can simply measure the length x Width = Area.  It really is that simple, so for example if your room measures 18 ft x 12 ft then it’s 18 x 12 = 216 sq.ft

 Step 2

If on the other hand you have a rectangle shaped room with a recess or two then measure each separately and then add the areas together.  So, let’s assume you have a room 18 ft x 12 ft with two recesses, each measuring 5 ft x 8 ft and 9 ft x 3 ft.  Take each individual area and measure the Length x Width to find the area of each and then simply add them together to find the total floor area.

So in this example we have 18 ft x 12 ft = 216 sq.ft, that’s the main area.  Now we have 5 ft x 8 ft = 40 sq.ft and finally the last area of 9 ft x 3 ft = 27 sq.ft.  This gives you a total floor area of the room of 216 sq.ft + 40 sq.ft + 27 sq.ft = 283 sq.ft

As you can see measuring the floor area of any room is very easy.  If the room is square or rectangle it’s just a single measurement but as you can see from Step 2 having a recess or two really doesn’t pose any real problems either.
