SAVE GETTING PAINT OVER THE SIDE OF THE TIN – So you fancy doing a bit of painting and decorating. You’ve got your paint and you’ve got your paint brush or paint roller and you’re ready to go, but how many times do you make a mess with overloading the paint brush and then wiping off the excess on the side of the tin?
If you’re anything like me this would be the normal thing, only to find paint dripping down the sides of the tin and onto the floor. What’s worse is that if you don’t use all the paint and have to replace the lid. You know for a fact that closing the lid is going to be a messy job and when it comes to using the paint again you’ll need a crowbar to open the lid – because the paint caked around the lid has set like concrete. Oh Dear!
Ask any professional painter and decorator and they’ll tell you two things:
- Never overload your paint brush – you should only ever dip approximately 1/2″ to 3/4″ of the brush into the paint.
- Never wipe off excess paint on the rim of the paint tin – due to the problems above.
There are two things you can do to prevent making a real mess if you need to wipe off the excess paint:
- Take a flat stick and wipe off the excess paint using the stick instead of the side of the tin.
- Try putting an elastic (rubber) band around the tin, so that it’s taught across the top and center of the paint tin. You can then wipe off any excess paint on the elastic band.
Both of the above tips should help you keep things a little cleaner when you are painting your room. If you have any neat little tips for painting and decorating please let us know.
