Tips for a Healthy Home Improvement

TIPS FOR A HEALTHY HOME IMPROVEMENT – Home is the place where one wants to wind up after a tiring day at work. This is the place where one needs to relax both physically and mentally. But sometimes some factors inside the house can trigger health issues in some people. Hence one need to keep few tips in mind to ensure a healthy home.

Ventilation: Good ventilation is a sign of good home construction. A house with proper ventilation ensures ample supply of fresh air that pushes out all the unhealthy items like mold from inside the house. Ventilation should be given due importance in rooms that are bound to create more moisture like bathroom. But it is not possible to have good ventilation in all houses especially for those that are in the cold part of the world. In such case, air purifiers should be used to ensure supply of fresh air inside the house. Moreover if you have the habit of using candle light inside the house, then it is better not to go in for paraffin wax candles as it produces carcinogens and other air pollutants. It is best to go for bees wax or soy wax candles.

Humidity: The humidity inside the house should be kept at a low level so that no molds are formed. Inexpensive moisture meters can be used to check the level of moisture inside the house. All water leaking places should be sealed properly. Condensation on the windows, walls etc are signs that the moisture level inside the house is high.

De-cluttering: A house that is cramped up with lots of unwanted goods is a breeding ground for uninvited guest like cockroach, mouse etc. Try to de-clutter the house once in a while so that all unwanted things are thrown out. Kitchen cabinets, wardrobes etc are areas that can become home to insects. Unwanted stuff can either be recycled or donated for charity.

De-bugging: There are different ways bugs enter the house. The main source of bug entry is your own shoes. Hence it is best to leave the shoes in the hallway or somewhere near the door so that there is little chance for the bugs to enter the house. Another source of bug is carpets or rugs. Hence these places should be regularly vacuum cleaned.

The green way: Going green or using more of eco friendly and organic products help in ensuring a healthy lifestyle. Furniture made of eco-friendly products like bamboo and cane, upholstery made of cotton or other non-synthetic items, décor items made by recycling old and unused items etc all helps in maintaining the eco friendly nature of your home. Fresh green plants inside the house are soothing not only to the eyes but also provide fresh air.

Bright light: When it comes to lighting in homes, the general trend is to go in for dim lights. People completely neglect the implication dim light has on mental health. Studies have shown that dim lights can cause mood swing, irritability and depression especially during winter days. Hence it is advisable to go in for bright colored light that complements natural light.

Follow the above tips. And you are ensured of physical and mental fitness throughout your life.

If you live in a pre-1978 home, check your painted woodwork, doors, windows, baseboards, etc for lead-based paint. If it is chipping and peeling, especially at friction points like doors and windows, use the LeadCheck swabs from hardware stores to do so. You can safely encapsulate it on non-traffic, non-frictions/walking areas to trap the deteriorating paint. Look up the rubbery encapsulation paints. In friction areas, you should completely strip it off and safely dispose of the waste (see http://www.epa.gov/lead) , then revarnish to return the wood to its natural beauty or repaint. Lead dust and fumes are toxic and easily inhaled. Don’t open, dry sand, high heat gun, or use toxic chemical stripper. A low 400F. infrared paint remover – speedheater- can do it safely and cleanly. http://www.eco-strip.com
