The UK’s Attitude to DIY

THE UK’S ATTITUDE TO DIY – In the first few months of 2012 Topps Tiles conducted a DIY survey to find out how the Great British public add value to their homes, who does what in the household and most importantly – who is the best at DIY! They pulled together this infographic to showcase the results…

Editor Notes:

Some really interesting information in this INFOGRAPHIC.

  • I wasn’t surprised that the top way to increase the value of your home was to convert the loft / attic.  This really seems like a sensible thing to do as it will increase living space and loft conversions make for great bedrooms with additional bathrooms, office, playrooms or even a nice studio apartment.
  • I guess us guys can clearly see that it’s no longer a man’s world. Dee, one of our editors, did say she wasn’t surprised by this statistic at all and that most women do most of the decorating and other jobs around the house – even when they work and take care of everything else.
  • We were all very surprised that learning online was one of the lowest ways to learn DIY.  With our growing readership I would have to say this trend will change.
  • In the last section it again is no surprise that men thing they are far superior.  I personally think that the ladies in this instance were far more gracious in their answer.

So there you have it.  A quick INFOGRAPHIC with the some excellent insight on where we spend our money in the home and who we think is the better at doing the jobs around the home.  What is interesting is that a fair amount of DIY is still undertaken by professionals.  I appreciate that when it comes to certain aspects, such as plumbing and wiring we need to be very careful but what did surprise me was that most of the work we have done is still undertaken by professions – I’m surprised purely on the basis of the economical times we live it and I honestly thought more people would undertake the work themselves.  On that assumption there is also the other side of the coin where people are just too busy working in order to keep the finances healthy and therefore easier to employ others.

    Hi Graham,
Although an interesting survey, I think the results have been consistant over the last decade. For between $3-5K you can remodel a kitchen nicely or if you chose you could buy the best furniture, tv with sound system, fireplace or other fine art to upgrade your living room and finish with the perfect flooring and wall color.(I believe most men could easily spend this amount for the perfect man-cave) The reason kitchen and bath upgrades give the largest return is because the majority of homeowners are intimidated by the variety of skills these rooms require, compared to a bucket of paint and shopping for the living room- plus the fact that if or when you move you leave the kitchen/bath behind. * I did find it surprising that landscaping did not rank higher on the list since it is a “first impression” item.
Even though there are some jobs that should be left to the pros, I am actually pretty excited when I hear of someone doing it themselves, even if it doesn’t turn out “perfectly.” Personally, doing the work myself represents my love for where I live as well as giving a sense of pride as I recall the work involved in getting the job done. I believe you acquire a greater intimacy with your home the more involved you are in its care and that is important.
Three cheers to all the weekend warriors, Dee

      Hi Dee
I certainly agree that landscaping is extremely important – especially the front garden as this is the first impression anyone gets of your property. This is of course very important if you are trying to sell – here’s an interesting article on Front Yards – http://hometipster.com/front-yard-garden-design/

I actually renovated a whole house once and the whole experience was extremely rewarding. I recruited the help of some friends and my older brother who is a complete whiz on DIY and can turn his hand to anything. I sold the property a couple of years later and my efforts paid off with a handsome return :)

      Thanks Dee
      Graham

        HI Graham,
All that time together with family and friends, working and sharing ideas as wll as experience; life doesn’t get any better. I’m glad you came out ahead on that project as well.
I couldn’t agree more with you about the front yard and mine could use a total upgrade from blah…to just about anything so I am going to pop over to your link for a few ideas.
        Thanks for the help, Dee
