Most of us spend more time in our bedroom than in any other room of the home, so it makes sense that it’s often the room where we feel the most comfortable expressing ourselves. Whether your style is clean and minimal, luxurious and decadent or downright messy and disorganised, what does your choice of bedroom decor really say about you?
Lots of bright colours can be stimulating – not always what you want when you’re trying to drift off to sleep. Bright colours in the bedroom can lift an otherwise dull space, but too much of a good thing might not be the way to create a calming oasis.
If your bedroom is full of clashing prints, textiles and decor, and you still find you sleep soundly, you’re obviously a laid-back soul who can kick back and relax anywhere. If you love a pop of colour but are concerned about overdoing it, a couple of art prints on the wall or a few brightly coloured scatter cushions are great ways to add interest to a room without going overboard.
If your bedroom wouldn’t look out of place in a five-star hotel, the chances are you appreciate the finer things in life and won’t sacrifice your comfort for anything. The classic luxury hotel look is all about subtle lighting, sumptuous fabrics, plumped-up cushions and calming neutral tones.
Beds can be the focal point and Birlea furniture certainly makes a room stand out, topped with a quality duvet and a pile of fluffy pillows – your room can look the optimum level of luxury. If this is your preferred style, you probably see your bedroom as your retreat from the stresses of everyday life and you never, ever scrimp on quality.
If your bedroom decor could best be described as exotic, the chances are you’re well travelled – or you’d like to be. Whether your colourful throws, handmade wall hangings and clashing cushions were purchased in the souks of Marrakech or picked up on your local high street, you have a taste for adventure and can’t think of anything worse than a bedroom decked out in shades of cream and white. You might even bring something exotic inside like a plant.
You are organised and like everything to be in its place. You may even struggle to relax if – heaven forbid – your bedroom is ever untidy. If, however, you feel you are stuck in a design rut and are concerned your bedroom looks a little matchy and dated, try introducing contemporary touches to add interest.
A stylish light fitting, a modern art print or some striking textiles can lift the whole room without messing up your carefully put together decor.
Some of us are naturally more tolerant of mess than others, so if your bedroom tends to be on the messy side, it’s not really anything to worry about. If, however, you notice dust building up or you’re struggling to find things you need, it might be time to get organised.
If storage space is an issue, consider some discreet under-bed storage options, such as plastic crates or zip-up canvas bags. If the problem is more about clutter than space, designate one afternoon to clearing out anything you don’t need or no longer use. Apart from anything else, it will make cleaning much easier in future.
